Why don't we do something about the price of fuel?
I agree that there area many ways to approach rising fuel prices at the pump, in order to provide much needed relief to Ontario drivers. Unfortunately, reducing fuel taxes does not ensure that tax breaks will be passed along to consumers. Experience in New Brunswick, for example, has shown that the oil companies have simply raised their prices and eaten up any savings that the  government attempted to give to its consumers by lowering gasoline taxes.

The federal government is responsible for the most recent gasoline tax increase, raising its excise tax from 8.5 to 10 cents a litre on February 28, 1995. The most recent increase in provincial gasoline taxes was on January 1, 1992, under the former NDP government.

Our government is confident that the best way to ensure the public pays a fair price for gasoline is for the federal government to encourage more effective competition in the marketplace and we encourage them to do so.
