Sterling
Announces $23,000 For Ottawa River Canoe Club
Lanark-Carleton
MPP Norm Sterling today delivered $23,000 in Ontario Trillium Foundation funding
to assist the Ottawa River Canoe Club with the purchase of new equipment that
will help draw more area residents into canoeing and kayaking activities.
“This
investment will help the club increase participation in activities for youth and
adults on the Ottawa River,” Sterling said. “It will assist with the
purchase of a safety boat, a boat trailer, four kayaks, a tent and paddles. It
will make a great difference in helping the club continue to increase local
participation in a healthy activity.”
The
increase in new equipment also means an additional instructor will be hired for
the summer.
The Ottawa
River Canoe Club’s mandate is to promote sport through canoeing and kayaking
for the west-end and rural parts of the City of Ottawa. The Club operates
children’s programs and other activities including sprint canoe, dragon boats,
and water safety.
The Club
has been operational since 2002. Membership doubled in its first year and
programs are being expanded in 2004 to include reaching out to schools in the
community to get canoe and water safety courses offered and a high school dragon
boat racing competition established. The Club also offers days camps for
children.
