Sterling introduces first of many petitions opposing Carp Dump expansion

Queen’s Park, Toronto – Lanark-Carleton MPP Norm Sterling proudly introduced the first of many petitions in opposition to the proposed expansion of the Carp Landfill site.

“I am pleased to speak out on behalf of the many members of my community who are against this proposal,” said Mr. Sterling.  I oppose this plan because the City of Ottawa has grown rapidly in our area over the past decade and our City Council has seen fit to designate even more growth going forward.  It does not make sense to expand this facility near such a densely populated and growing residential community.”

The petitions Mr. Sterling introduced today were given to him at last night’s Community Action Forum hosted by Ottawa Councillors Janet Stavinga, Eli El-Chantiry and Peggy Feltmate at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Kanata .  The event was attended by approximately 200 local residents.

In his efforts to oppose this expansion plan, Mr. Sterling has called upon the Minister of the Environment to require a thorough Environmental Assessment including the study of all possible alternatives including incineration and the creation of new landfill sites.

“Petitions are one way that I can ensure that the voices of my constituents are heard by the government,” said Mr. Sterling.  “I encourage all community members who are concerned about this issue to sign a petition and send it to me to be read in the Legislature.”

The petition is available on Mr. Sterling’s Web site at www.normsterling.com attached to this news release.
