Sterling succeeds in changing Driver’s Licence I.D. requirements

Requirements changed after Sterling and opposition colleagues ask questions

Carleton Place, Ontario – Lanark-Carleton MPP Norm Sterling is pleased that Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar has responded to the problems with new identification requirements after Sterling and his colleague Bill Murdoch, MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound raised the issue in Question Period on February 27th.

When, the new standards for identity documents to apply for a driver’s licence were implemented, on January 23, 2006, MTO did not understand how they would impact residents of rural Ontario .  Young people were having a difficult time providing a document with proof of their signature.

“I had heard from some very frustrated young people and their parents so I took their concerns to the Minister,” said Mr. Sterling.  “And, in an unusually co-operative move, the Liberal Government listened to the problem and corrected it in a reasonable length of time.”

In their March 17th press release MTO stated that: “If an applicant is unable to present one of the above documents as proof of signature, the applicant may present a completed ‘Declaration from a Guarantor’”. The new form was introduced on the same day.

Individuals who have been experiencing difficulty producing the required documents can get the “Declaration from a Guarantor” form from the Drive Test centres or download it from: http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/Declaration_from_Guarantor_e.pdf.
