Queen’s Park,
“The deadline for public
comment on the Draft Terms of Reference is this Friday so I wanted to ensure
these petitions were all read into the Legislative record before that,” said
Mr. Sterling. “And
to be sure that both Waste Management and the Minister of the Environment take
these petitions into consideration, I also sent a copy of them to Waste
Management.”
Many
of the petitions Mr. Sterling introduced today were given to him the Walk to
Stop the Dump on April 22.
“Today
I read petitions containing approximately 8,500 signatures, and that is on top
of earlier petitions which contained more than 1,000 signatures,” said Mr.
Sterling. “I have been very
pleased to see so many concerned citizens expressing their opposition to the
expansion in this way, and even more pleased to lend my voice to their
concerns.”
In
his efforts to oppose this expansion plan, Mr. Sterling has called upon the
Minister of the Environment to require a thorough Environmental Assessment
including the study of all possible alternatives including incineration and the
creation of other new landfill sites.
“I
oppose this expansion because the site is located so close to existing and
planned residential neighbourhoods,” said Mr. Sterling.
“I simply don’t believe that is the most appropriate place for a
dump.”
